I'm pretty sure the challenge show is over by now so it's probably safe to post my VVC 2009 vids...

Title: Just the One (19MB)
Artist: The Levellers
Fandom: Dead Like Me
Spoilers: S1-S2

An empty head for an empty purse.

Do you fancy a drink
Just the one
To clear your head
We won't be long

It's a beautiful day
To waste away
There's plenty of time
For another one

You know you shouldn't do it
But can't see no reason why
So blow your mind

Make mine a short
I'm getting there
But where there is
I couldn't care

There must be something
I haven't tried
Perhaps that bottle
Before my eyes

[Chorus]

Through the haze
The sun goes down
It's getting late
Let's hit the town
Call some friends
To paint it red
Feed the animal
In your head

[Chorus]

They throw you out
You hit the night
Go to a club
You feel alright
You get a pill
Take just half
Then take the rest of it
For a laugh

[Chorus]

The rest is blank
And that's the worst
An empty head
For an empty purse
You had a laugh
Or so you think
But in the morning
You just stink

So you fancy a drink
It's just the one
To clear your head
We won't be long

Title: Throwing Stones (46MB)
Artist: Paula Cole
Fandom: The Closer
Spoilers: S1-S3

"Interrogating people, getting to the truth and knowing the right thing to do politically are two very different things. In fact, to do either of them very well, you have to pretty much ignore one of them altogether, which is what I've done. So now, I'm in trouble again..." - Brenda in ep 113: Standards and Practices

So call me a bitch in heat and
I'll call you a liar
And we'll throw stones until we're dead

There you go again you cut me off from talkin'
You bask in the glory
The center of the circle
All the friends think you're a comedian
So kind and generous
But I am suffering

Away from here
I wanna be
Away from here
Away from here
Away from every little thing
Every little thing
I used to love your every little every little thing

So call me a bitch in heat and
I'll call you a liar
And we'll throw stones until we're dead

You're the puppeteer and I'm the puppet
You manipulate me with your real catholic shit
Everytime I try to talk it through
You turn it around and make it suffer
Like David and Goliath

Away from here
I wanna be
Away from here
Away from here
Away from every little thing
Every little thing
I used to love your every little every little thing

Now you call me a bitch in heat and
I'll call you a liar
And we'll throw stones until we're dead

Your arms beneath me
Your lying inside me
I used to love your every little every little thing
Your eyes grew stars
Your hand in my purse
And now I hate your every little everything all day

Oh mama
I didn't know life was this hard
Oh mama
My innocence has been tarred

My inner vision, dulled and darkened
I keep myself away to you
I fuck my sorrow humbly
And throw my crown upon the ground

It's you I hope for
And us I pray for
And me that I believed that was wrong
And now my anger is my best friend
Be careful I may bite your head off

Liar

So call me a bitch in heat and
I'll you a motherfucker
And we'll throw stones until we're dead

So call me a bitch in heat and
I'll you a motherfucker
And we'll throw stones until we're dead

Title: Unforgivable? (37MB)
Artist: Claudine Longet
Fandom: Harry Potter
Spoilers: movies 1-5

Imperio, Crucio, and Avada Kedavra aren't the only ways to control, hurt, and kill in the wizarding world. Compassion seems a rare commodity; fortunately, that's where Luna comes in.

Broken windows and empty hallways,
A pale dead moon in a sky streaked with grey.
Human kindness overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles,
With frozen smiles to chase love away.
Human kindness overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Lonely, lonely.
Tin can at my feet,
I think I'll kick it down the street.
That's the way to treat a friend.

Bright before me, the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness overflowing,
And I think it's gonna rain today.

Title: Stars (34MB)
Artist: The Weepies
Fandom: Dexter
Spoilers: S1-S3

All it takes is a little faith and a lot of heart, sweetheart.

Tangerines are hanging heavy
Glowing marigolden hues
Teasing a half-pale moon
And I feel a pull to the blue-velvet dark and stars

Pink magnolia, blushing and coy
Savors the sun while she shines
You've got yours and I've got mine
Together we glide through the blue-velvet dark and stars

All it takes is a little faith, and a lot of heart

Back and forth we ply these oars
They move in time and get entwined
Green with joy then grey with sorrow
Ripened fruit that falls tomorrow
Filling us with brilliance

Branches are bare with a pulse underneath
Flowering slowly inside
Your hands are warm and my body is wide
To hold all the promise of blue-velvet dark and stars

All it takes is a little faith and a lot of heart, sweetheart

Title: When You Wish (38MB)
Artist: Cecilia
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Spoilers: S1-S4

Makes no difference who you are.

When a star is born
They possess a gift or two
One of them is this
They have the power
To make a wish come true

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
Like dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and pulls you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dream comes true

Wow.

This is kind of disjointed as my fragmented brain cells try to make some kind of order.

MASON! I didn't even know I missed him! I'm sitting here cracking up, but that last shot of him in the clown suit just kills me. Oh, Mason. Excellent job

I spent a good few seconds just staring frozen at the screen after Stars.
*is speechless*

*shivers*

And Luna is so amazing. I love how it clearly is through her eyes but not exactly a judgment on her part? I like how it's the viewer that reads the context and calls the question of what's "unforgivable." If I'm reading that right.

I have to admit that it wasn't until midway through the second part that the CREEPY WRONGNESS of When You Wish struck me and I had to start the whole thing over again and actually WATCH for the reveal this time. The ones who were rewarded with the um, shiny futures, and the women who were burned up in the journey. Excellent use of that scene of the menfolk watching the natives and how utterly depressing that last shot of Hera. But it's the Chief/Boomer/Cally/Tory cycle of violent death that really hits home. Damn. *slow claps*

Man, I love your feedback. I especially love that you mentioned the Chief/Boomer/Cally/Tory cycle of violent death because that was one of the most important (read: horrifying) connections I made in the vid, I think. Thank you so much for the wonderful comments. :)

If you don't mind rambling about your vid a bit, When You Wish is still sticking with me even days later. And I'm very curious about it from a vidder angle.

Even though I adore this show unreasonably, for me BSG's ending is all wrapped up in "Fail, show. FAIL.", especially for gender issues in the finale. But other, um...memorable times too. Which is a lot of the horror and creepiness I get from your vid, since all of that agency the women had earlier gets harder to find in the second half when they die off as their "destiny" takes hold. But my bias here makes it hard to be objective about certain scenes, so while I think the ending sequence of Nicky and his dads, Adama and his dead girlfriend, and Hera in the past and present, is a very bleak outlook and ultimately, kind of a condemnation, I don't think my perspective is the only one possible, since I have have many friends who loved the ending. It maybe would seem less depressing to others since they did end up home and became us? Where I saw it as pointing out exactly who didn't? And since I'm putting a ton of my own emotional context in these scenes, I wanted to ask your thoughts about choosing them. I do think it stands on its own, so this is totally for my own selfish interest, since I love when there's a vid that asks me to make even more connections. It's fun! ;)

Plus, I'm also not very familiar with IDIC and I'm wondering if there's a connection there that blew completely past me. I would have no idea if that's important to viewing or not.

IDIC refers to Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. There's actually been some controversy brewing after the con that had to do with how vidders interpreted this challenge show prompt. I stand by my interpretation of 'diversity,' but concede that maybe some of what I was intending and how it relates to the theme may have gotten lost in translation. From the first, BSG trumpeted itself as this really progressive show that featured interesting, empowered, layered female characters (side note: originally I was going to feature all minorities, including characters of color, that were introduced in the miniseries, but when I realized that Gaeta would be the only addition, I decided to stick with the narrower focus of sexism). It felt like a slap in the face as one by one these same characters were destroyed over the course of the show, most especially in the final season, by fate/destiny/whateverthefuck as their male counterparts' fates conversely summoned protection.

In the broadest of strokes, the final sequence is meant to be a condemnation as you say. All the women we met in the miniseries are dead with their 'powers' from the opening bit either having been made obsolete (all the mythology that focused on Kara and Laura early in the series ultimately led them to uninhabitable earth 1.0 and killed blood sacrifice Elosha along the way I might add...and it is only *after* Kara dies that she regains some of that power with the help of her daddy, no less, and helps lead the fleet to earth 2.0 only to abruptly vanish once more, never getting to reap the fruits of her labor) or they've been brutally stripped from them (Cally and Dee's power imo was that they had faith, *hope* to drive them forward to survive - hence, why I included them in the opening sequence hugging after Adama tells them he knows where earth is - and of course once that hope is lost, the two disillusioned women become suicidal. But unlike their love interests Lee and Chief when they likewise suffered bouts of suicidal thoughts, neither are saved from their hopelessness by some higher power/purpose...one blows her brains out and the other is unlucky enough to come face to face with a murderess in her time of need). Boomer, meanwhile, is a character who gets used by both sides and is executed when she finally reclaims her own personal power and of her own volition makes the choice to save Hera. I liked the visual of Boomer carrying Hera there because the two characters had roughly the same role to play in the series. They are both hybrids...Hera by nature and Boomer by nurture (after all she spent a larger part of her life as human Sharon Valerii than she did as her cylon identity). They both are pawns, but of course the innocent is the only one worthy of being kept around long enough to play out the endgame on earth 2.0. So Boomer is killed and Hera is saved in one fell swoop.

In the vid's home stretch, I move from these dead women to the alive men because canon seems to suggest that it's only through the latter that the former's lives mattered. All Kara wanted was to be remembered...and this need is answered in Lee who promises he'll never forget her as he heads off to explore this beautiful new world of his. Cally's son, Nicky, who is her living, breathing legacy is passed by the father who was personally chosen by her to co-parent her son and who raised him the first year of life to the biological dad as if Cally's wishes and more importantly Nicky's need for stability and familiarity after the loss of his mom were insignificant. Apparently Chief's need to flee to solitude in the finale trumped Nicky's suddenly shaky claim on him. Moving on, thank god Adama finally makes an honest woman out of Laura. If he hadn't slipped that ring on her finger, well...I don't know if I would've known to cry because it's not that Laura died, it's that *Adama* lost the love of his life, you see.

Continued in next reply...

Hera reappears in the final moments of the vid looking up (at a star, no doubt) and we see as it flashes forward into the future that her grand destiny, her reason for being was to have tons of babies (supplanting the native line already on earth 2.0, of course), die an early death, be dug up a gazillion years later, and have a picture of her bones make it into our magazines with the caption 'Mankind's First Mother Gives Up Her Secrets' on the opposite page.

Sorry, still a little bitter about it all if you can't tell. ;)

This is both an awesome vid AND an awesome explanation. It breaks my heart. These incredible women and the tragedy - thank you for showing it so clearly.

I'm glad my rambly commentary made some sort of sense. And thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

Thank you for being so generous with your commentary and I'm sorry I didn't tell you how much I appreciate it earlier.

This is a hard one for me to re-watch and I think the uncertainty I had is more from a position of my own insecurities and having misrepresented people's opinions on the finale before rather than anything interpretively that you did at all. I think your point comes through very sharp and clear and it hurts to see the reveal of everything they fought for made meaningless. My first reaction was very much, "OMG! Someone made this! THANK YOU" (and then "STAB!"). So really, THANK YOU.

If he hadn't slipped that ring on her finger, well...I don't know if I would've known to cry because it's not that Laura died, it's that *Adama* lost the love of his life, you see.

And YES. Damn it.

I'm kind of fascinated by your interpretation of the theme, BSG did and was that kind of show and this is the best broad deconstruction of how it failed that original promise that I've seen. It also looks like I wouldn't have asked the question if I'd been a little more careful about reading previous comments where you say just this, but shorter. Rather than asking if maybe you were less angry than I was, what I should have asked is if you were more.*facepalm*
